University of Ottawa

The University of Ottawa has a long history closely linked to the Ottawa Indians and the American Baptist Church. From 1837 to 1855, Reverend Joseph Meeker and his wife dedicated themselves to improving the lives of the Ottawa Indian tribe in Kansas and promoting education and religion. John Temesseur Jones carried on their commitment, coordinating the cooperation between the Baptist Church and the Indians, laying the foundation for the university's founding. The Ottawa Indians donated 20,000 acres of land, and the Baptist Church pledged to provide free education. Founded in 1865, the university still offers free tuition to descendants of the tribe.
